Old and New Versions of GPSS.EXE

updated 1515 Thursday 19th June 2008 UK time

Robin This page is for those in direct e-mail contact with me, who have already been using GPSS with a GPS, and have answered the "Quiz" in section 2 of the download page This enables you to try out the very latest version of GPSS.EXE - and help me find bugs :-) After a period of several months, we "freeze" this pre-release version of GPSS.EXE, give it a good test, then include it within the new "GPSS Baseline" on the DOWNLOAD Page above - which everyone uses. Sorry that the "Change History" below is in "shorthand" - those in contact with me will know what I mean :-)

I'd like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to those of you, whether business partner or "GPS enthusiast", who help us all to find the bugs, or make good suggestions on how we can improve GPSS further. Please keep up the good work :-)

Safety and GPSS

Make sure you have a working copy of GPSS from the Download page, before you upgrade it with the pre-release version of GPSS.EXE. You should start with the latest two floppy disk GPSS Baseline from the GPSS download page.

Documentation or VERY old stuff

If you need documentation on GPSS data formats please visit ADDMAPS page.

For VERY old GPSS.EXE change history, please visit the OLD page.

before you try the pre-release GPSS.EXE ...

Please make sure you have thoroughly tested the current GPSS Baseline version of GPSS.EXE with your GPS "on the road", including the tips provided in reply to your step 2 Quiz form, such as adding mapping. It may be a good idea to save the baseline version of GPSS.EXE (e.g. OLDGPSS.EXE) in your GPSS folder, before replacing it with the pre-release version you are about to download.

32-bit version of old GPSS.EXE v5.97d - recompiled in March 2007

For 12 years the GPSS.EXE within the GPSS Baseline is a 16-bit application, compiled with VB2. This 32-bit version is compiled with VB5, and is three times larger. Some functions may be faster, such as display of the USA vector mapping - see tigerzip page.

You may download the pre-release VB5 version of GPSS.EXE from www.gpss.co.uk/vb5g597d.exe
VB5G597D.EXE is 520,623 bytes and self-extracts into vb5 v5.97d GPSS.EXE at 1,499,648 bytes.

from Robin on 2nd March 2007: recent tests on XP gave an "unexpected error". VB5 was used to recompile GPSS.EXE from the old v5.97d source files, and was uploaded again. The EXE download is now 521,185 bytes instead of the original 521,185 bytes. Reason unknown.
