Berkshire and What the Ombudsman Decided

updated 1100 Saturday 18th January 2003

David Gooch has provided details of his complaints which were upheld by the Health Service Ombudsman in November 2002. Without any legal training himself or assistance from others, David managed to fight the case of his late mother, an Alzheimer's sufferer, which concerned the Berkshire Health Authority. During nearly five years he wrote some 200 letters and throughout his mother's protracted illness flew back and forth from California where he has worked for many years.

However, he recently obtained the decision he had sought from the Health Service Ombudsman, upholding his complaints. Of particular interest, this also requires that the new Thames Valley Strategic Health Authority identify other patients in their area who may have been wrongly denied NHS funding and that they liaise with other NHS bodies to ensure that appropriate recompense is made.

Footnote by Robin: I'm very grateful to David for the detailed advice he continues to give me, day be day, related to the same Reading, Wokingham and Berkshire area authorities involved in my mother's case. He has kindly set up his own web site, which you can visit using the link above, and where you will find how to contact him.
